Throwaway Drawing

Something recently up for auction on Ebay...

Every so often a Popeye animation drawing shows up - this one looks to be from 'Her Honor the Mare' - the first Famous Studio Popeye cartoon short to be made in Technicolor. I say 'looks to be' because on viewing the cartoon - it's not there. It's obvious that the drawing came from the aforementioned cartoon given the subject and situation - I would love to know why it was cut. A redundant gag perhaps??

Interesting drawing.

Maybe it was an advertising drawing. Made to promote Popeye's cartoons in Technicolor, perhaps?

BTW, your aap print looks horrible.

I can say with certainty that it's not a promotional drawing only because that sort of artwork is usually clear and staged well. The drawing in the post is awkward looking and doesn't highlight the characters' faces and expressions as is done in most promotional art. It looks like an inbetween.

The cartoon was not put up for only your benefit - it was put up to accompany the post and for those who do not want to search elsewhere online to see it. So the quality really doesn't matter...

I'm sure you'd agree that inbetweens can be interesting and dynamic drawings in themselves.
